If you are a parent then you well know how hard it can be to get your children to sit down and focus on doing their homework. It is kind of understandable, after all they spent all day at school and now that they are home with all its distractions and delights the last thing they want to do is feel like they are back in school again! Even so, homework is essential to the learning process, and like it or not they need to buckle down and do it, no matter how exasperating it is for you to make that happen!
There is an important thing you can do to help your child focus on their homework, and that is to give them the gift of a wooden children’s study desk (this is commonly referred to as โต๊ะเขียนหนังสือเด็กไม้ in Thai) that’s all their own! Childhood education experts all agree that one of the best ways to encourage your child to study is to set up a special quiet corner of the home for their study desk, a dedicated learning zone that will be free of distraction. It will remind them that their studies are just as important as play time, and might even be a little bit fun since it’s happening in their own private spot!
When your child has to share a table at study time with you or their siblings, it’s naturally distracting. It’s much more interesting to tease each other, or talk, or play, or generally do anything but their homework! Having a dedicated child study desk that they can work at by themselves allows you to limit any distractions, you can place it in an area of the home that’s off the beaten path, where the TV can’t be seen and the other family member’s casual conversations can’t be overheard. You can choose what’s allowed on and in the desk, only art or writing supplies, not toys and mobile devices! In a quiet space like this your child will be able to calm down and get their homework done, after all, the sooner they do the sooner they are free to go play!
A child can feel a sense of ownership and pride when they have their own private study space and desk. They will enjoy having a special place of their own where their siblings can’t bother them, it gives them a sense of adult autonomy that children always crave. Being in their study zone means that they will be able to do better scholastic work and take pride in it. Hang up a bulletin board that’s just for them to show off their best work on and be sure to check it frequently so you can compliment them on its high quality. This kind of praise and attention is sure to promote greater effort and output from your child!
While it might still be a struggle to get your child to do their homework, having a special space of their own for it to happen is sure to make convincing them a bit easier!
