The Do’s and Don’ts of Packing for a Small Move

Small moves are against the most deceiving type of move because they appear easy on the surface but often have nuances that make them among the most challenging types of moves. To that end, there are a number of do’s and don’ts all prospective movers should adhere to when planning a small move. The most pertinent of those are as follows:

Do: Start Early and Plan Ahead

For those unfamiliar, small moves qualify as those under 2,000 pounds, which is part of the reason they are so deceiving. Despite being on the smaller side, you should be preparing for your move as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute chaos. Get a timeline created for all the packing you need to do and ensure that each stage of the timeline provides adequate time.

To reduce stress further, aim to break down every task you have into manageable chunks to foster a more organized move. This will allow you to focus on things one at a time, which will allow you to feel more on top of everything.

Don’t: Overpack Boxes

Boxes have limitations for a reason, and they should not be surpassed. If you make the choice to overpack boxes, it can lead to damaged items, your boxes breaking, and higher shipping costs. The weight of boxes affects shipping rates, and overpacking can lead to increased costs. On top of this, though, dimensions also play a role in the cost of shipping, so by overpacking, you are doubling down on an increase in costs.

To avoid this, pack your boxes just until the point they close flat but nothing more. Try to distribute the weight across multiple boxes as well, given the cost association.

Do: Use Proper Packing Materials

One of the most important items to handle for your move is to purchase the proper packing supplies. Beyond sturdy boxes, you also need to get yourself bubble wrap, packing paper, and packing tape. Using your own linens or towels as an extra layer of padding is fine, but you want to ensure you have a strong foundation protecting goods within your boxes.

If you want to go the extra mile and be eco-friendly, consider recycled paper, reused boxes, or other similar eco-friendly options. This can allow you to potentially save some money, too as these options are often less expensive. Before buying anything, don’t forget to measure the items that will go into the boxes. You don’t want to overbuy, as mentioned, as this will lead to both wasted money and effort. Therefore, break out the measuring tape and get set up so that you can pack everything up efficiently.

Don’t: Skip Labeling Your Boxes

As mentioned, labeling boxes is extremely important. It will make understanding the contents and the intended destinations far easier so that you don’t accidentally destroy fragile items. Try to use large and legible writing on your goods and aim to use color-coded labels if possible.

Label all sides of the boxes that you pack so that anyone moving the boxes understands what’s inside. This will prevent any confusion that could otherwise lead to damage to the goods. If you hire professional packers, they should take care of this on your behalf.

Do: Pack Fragile Items Carefully

It will come as no surprise that fragile items will take a little extra care when you are packing. To that end, ensure that you give special attention to any items such as glassware, electronics, artwork, and other fragile pieces. To pack these items safely, use soft packing materials such as bubble wrap, foam, cushions, double-boxing techniques, and more.

For items made of glass, take it a step further by wrapping each item individually and placing it into boxes with dividers. If you have electronics, pack them in their original boxes if possible or try to use specialized packing materials. This will help you to avoid damaging anything that may be sensitive.

Handle your move with efficiency

When you start to prepare for your move, it’s important to outline the do’s and don’ts that you should follow. This will help to make the entire process smoother and more efficient. Stay organized, take your time when moving, and make proactive efforts to protect your belongings. Efficient packing will save you time, money, and effort during your move. The key is to balance practical tips with your own budget and timeline so that you can be satisfied with your move and that your goods can be protected.
